Richard hailed from Lewisburg, Marshall County, Tennessee.
Richard was one of four graduates from Lewisburg’s Haynes-McLean School in 1907. He was appointed to the Naval Academy by Representative Houston.
He was part of the “Baptist Church Squad” who met at the home of Reverend and Mrs. T. C. Bird in Annapolis. The Reverend wrote a letter to the editor of the Evening Capital which was published on August 24, 1910. He described Richard as a bright, witty, gentlemanly little fellow. . . . We shall greatly miss dear Landy’s sunny face.”
Richard died on board the USS Iowa one day out from Norfolk, Virginia. A military funeral was given at the Naval Academy with services by Rev. H. H. Clark, and then his body was sent to Lewisburg for burial in the Bethbirei Cemetery. His parents are both buried there.
Richard's father, a doctor, died of Bright’s Disease in 1896 in Nashville where he had gone for treatment. He left medicine to work as a mail clerk and received $3,500 in damages from an accident a month before he died. His mother was Mary Virginia "Ginnie" who was a public school teacher, and his sister was Mary. Richard's grandparents were Captain W. M. and Mary Robinson of Verona, and his uncle was J. W.
