Millard Rosenberg

Hayward, California

Rosie

A PUNGENT aroma permeates the atmosphere, a strong suffocating odor, an odor which brings to mind the rich scents of the Orient and foreign climes, or Gibraltar bazaars.

"Hey, Chink! Where are my non-reg shoes? How's to lend me those non-reg socks of yours—boy I'm sure dragging a hot one this week." Rosie is at it again, yet, and forevermore.

Coming from the land of heroes and handsome men, California, this example of what the hot sunshine will do has tried in his four years at the N.A. to beat the movie sheiks at their own game. Yes, it's hard on the girls, we admit.

From Scotland's craggy shores to the barren land of Tangier a trail of broken hearts lies to his credit, victims of his wavy locks, romantic eyes, and——oh, well.

"Yeah, she fell for me cold as ——." Another day, another drag, etc., ad infinitum.

Orchestra (4, 3, 2, 1); Mandolin Club (4, 3, 2); Leader Orchestra (1); Sub-Squad (4, 3).

Loss

Millard was lost on June 5, 1944 when the training aircraft he was aboard crashed near Marksville, Louisiana following a mid-air collision. Four other men were also lost.

From the August 1944 issue of Shipmate:

Other Information

Millard resigned as a midshipman on September 24, 1925. Note this was after his graduation; suspect he was one of the many graduates of this era who were not offered a commission. The Register of Commissioned and Warrant Officers of the United States Navy and Marine Corps of 1926 lists dozens of them.

From researcher Kathy Franz:

Millard was born in Massachusetts. In November, 1926, Millard lived in the Hotel Dana in Berkeley. His car collided with another driven by a city councilman. Millard’s car overturned, but no one was hurt. He took post-graduate work at the University of California.

In April, 1927, Millard’s wife Kathryne (Ellis) was listed with 13 other record romances from the University of California in Berkeley. Eight coeds had already married including Kathryne who married in February.

Their daughters were Caroline Kay born on December 10, 1932, and Margaret Ann born on April 6, 1938, in Oakland.

For the next 16 years, Millard was a music teacher and orchestra director at Roosevelt and Castlemont high schools and at Claremont Junior High School in Oakland.

In February, 1937, he played the cello at the Oakland Teachers Association annual dinner.

In June, 1940, Millard served as an assistant conductor at the annual concert of all-city high school symphony orchestra.

In October, 1942, Millard directed a course in Marine Navigation two nights a week at the Technical Evening High School in Oakland.

Per the Oakland Tribune, October 11, 1942: “The class included definitions, navigation methods, chart construction, magnetic compass, course corrections, chart navigation, fixing position by bearings, dead reckoning, instruments, latitude by sun or stars, position lines, storm signals and buoy system currents, rules of the road, meteorology, weather indications.

“The course is a practical study of navigation designed to give improved knowledge of piloting to persons seeking usable instruction for handling smaller craft and yachts.”

In January, 1943, he taught aerial navigation at Alameda Evening High School.

He entered the Army Air Forces in April, 1943. He was sent to Miami beach for duty. He later transferred to the Central Instructors’ School, Randolph Field in Texas from the Cadet Training Group No. 1 in Chico, California.

Millard belonged to a Hayward Masonic lodge, and he played with the Scottish Rite Orchestra.

His father Leonard, who ran a feed and fuel store, died in 1935. Millard’s mother Enid was president of the Hayward Republican Women’s Club in 1928. His brothers were Lyle and Charles, and his sisters were Enid, Betty and Mary. Brother Lyle graduated from West Point in 1922 and was a lieutenant in the corps of engineers in 1924. Millard’s grandfather Col. Allen Tracy Bird was a Civil war veteran and a pioneer California and Arizona newspaper publisher. He died in December 1930.

He is buried in California; he was survived by his wife, Katheryn.

Memorial Hall Error

Millard is not listed with his classmates. He was identified through the diligent efforts of Leslie Poche, a volunteer who combed through Shipmate issues to find operational losses not accounted for in Memorial Hall. Likelihood of mistaken identity is low; multiple contemporaneous reports gave his age as 41 and hometown of Oakland, California (very near Hayward).

Class of 1925

Millard is one of 30 members of the Class of 1925 on Virtual Memorial Hall.
