McFaddin Moise

Sumter, South Carolina

Navy's soccer and basketball teams received most of "Mac's" attention. He played on the plebe, junior varsity and varsity soccer teams and on the plebe basketball team. Far from being a Red Mike, Mac dragged to all the hops, usually a different girl to each. The Academic Department cost Mac some worry during plebe year but he successfully crossed every river with the rest of us. Mac's encounters with the Executive Department were fewer than average, due to two years of previous experience at Clemson College.

The Class of 1946 was graduated in June 1945 due to World War II. The entirety of 2nd class (junior) year was removed from the curriculum.

Biography

From the Sumter Daily Item (Sumter, South Carolina) on February 5, 1953:

Lieutenant McFaddin Moise, USN, 30-year-old jet fighter pilot, died in the crash of his plane about noon yesterday at Patuxent, Md. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. F. M. Moise of Sumter, having been born here November 7, 1922. Mechanical failure of the aircraft was blamed for the crash which occurred on a takeoff after the plane had reached about 200 feet.

Lieutenant Moise, a graduate of the United States Naval Academy in 1945, served on a minesweeper in Japanese waters immediately after he was commissioned. He later was put in command of the vessel on its return voyage to the Naval Base at Charleston.

His next assignment was in underwater research in radar at the Underwater Research Laboratory at Yorktown, Va., and following this he asked for transfer to the Naval Air Force.

After training at Pensacola and Jacksonville, Fla. and Corpus Christi, Tex., he was assigned to duty with the Atlantic Fleet and was stationed at Chincoteague Naval Air Station, Va.

He was selected for jet training at Pensacola and then was assigned to the Naval Test Station at Patuxent. Married December 21, 1948 to Betty Garris of Andrews, he is survived by his wife and two children, McFaddin Jr., two and one half, and Mary Frances, eight months.

Other survivors include his parents, four brothers, F. M. Moise J. of Sumter, Robert B. Moise of Sumter and Bishopville, James D. Moise of Washington, D. C.. and Francis D. Moise of Sumter: and one sister, Mrs. William Harritt of Indianapolis, Ind. His maternal grandmother, Mrs. R. C. Blanding of Sumter, also survives.

SUBJ: Son of deceased pilot

I am McFaddin Moise Jr, sole surviving son of Navy Lt. McFaddin Moise. He was an AJ2 Savage test pilot who died on 2/4/1953 on take off.

I have very few details of this crash or of anyone who knew my Dad.

If there is anyone out there who knew Mac it would be great to hear the stories, sordid or otherwise.

Likewise every year all the "males" of the Moise Clan gather at the Moise Island in Charleston SC. All friends of the family are invited. Just contact me at [email protected].

Thanks,
McFaddin Moise Jr, father to McFaddin Moise III, Grandfather to McFaddin Moise IV

From aviator.org:

I am looking for information on my Grandfathers plane crash on February 4, 1953 of an AJ [Savage]. His name was Lt. McFaddin Moise [some records list him as "Hoise", but his name was Moise.] Also killed in the accident was AD2 James Vaughn. Mechanical trouble just after take-off was to blame. This occurred at the Naval Air Station - Patuxent, Maryland. There is a street named in his honor [Hoise Street - I am working to get the proper name on the street and also a Vaughn Street on the Naval Air Base - Not sure why they have his name wrong]. I see several people on here, including Chuck Emmitt who might have information or would have been there. Please feel free to reach out to me if anyone does. Charles Hill, [email protected]

He is buried in South Carolina.
