HENRY JOSEPH MCGREEVEY

Newark, Ohio

Henry "Mac" McGreevey came to the Naval Academy after two years in the Navy, one of which was spent at NAPS. Not quite the smartest man in the class, but a dedicated natural athlete, Mac could have played on any one of the varsity teams. He decided on soccer and has played three years on the varsity squad without any previous experience.

Henry has always been high on the aptitude ladder, being Batt. Commander second class year and Co. Commander first class year. If his grades were a little higher he definitely would have been among the 5 stripers.

Seldom seen without a beautiful drag on the weekends, Mac is well known for his good naturedness and friendliness. He is undoubtedly a man with very few enemies.

After two bouts with seasickness on Youngster and First Class cruise, Mac has decided that Navy Air is the only way to fly.

He was also a member of the 27th Company (2nd set)

Loss

Henry was lost on August 3, 1970 when the P-3 Orion he was co-piloting crashed near Searchlight, Nevada during a thunderstorm. All ten men aboard were killed.

From the November 1970 issue of Shipmate:

Lt. (jg) Henry Joseph McGreevey, USN, died 3 August near Nellis Air Force Base, Nv., as the result of an aircraft accident. Funeral services were held in St. John's Episcopal Church, Worthington Valley, Glyndon, Md., followed by interment there.
A native of Newark, Oh., he attended the Naval Academy Preparatory School in Bainbridge, Md., before entering USNA. While at Annapolis he served as battalion commander and graduated with honors in 1968.
His first assignment was Pensacola. An outstanding student in the Naval Air Training Command, he was designated naval aviator in September 1969. He then received Naval Air Advanced Training at Corpus Christi, Tx. He served in FAETUPAC at North Island, Ca., and VP-31 at Moffett Field prior to his assignment to VP-17, NAS Barber's Point, Hawaii.
Lt. McGreevey is survived by his widow, Rose Tracy and his mother.

The P3B patrol plane, stationed at Barber's Point, Hawaii, was on a training flight Monday with its crew of three officers and seven enlisted men.
The plane was about 50 miles south of Las Vegas on a flight from Nellis Air Force Base near Las Vegas to the North Island Naval Air Station in San Diego when it entered an area of thunderstorm activity. Witnesses said that a bolt of lightning apparently shattered the antisubmarine patrol plane.
McGreevey made his home with his aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. William Bullock, 545 Eleanor Parkway. He was married last August, and his wife, Tracy, is in Hawaii.
McGreevey graduated from Newark High School in 1962. He entered the Navy in 1963, and received an appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis. While there, he was a member of the Navy Soccer Team that won the national championship.
Following his graduation, McGreevey went to flight school and then was stationed at Barber's Point, Hawaii.

Previously selected for promotion to LT, he was posthumously promoted. He is buried in Maryland. The Henry McGreevey Scholarship was established by family friends to annually award the Ohio State University - Newark Campus student athlete who contributes outstanding leadership and spirit with athletic excellence.
