Loss

George was lost on October 22, 1973 when the SH-3G helicopter he was co-piloting crashed shortly after taking off from USS Midway for a search-and-rescue mission; two other Midway aircraft had collided earlier. He was a member of Helicopter Combat Support Squadron (HC) 1. Two others aboard were also lost.

Additional information about both crashes and the aircraft involved is summarized on a List of accidents and incidents involving military aircraft (1970–1974).
