Edwin Rufus Quinby was admitted to the Naval Academy from New York on May 22, 1884 at age 14 years 9 months. He did not graduate; he was "found deficient at annual examinations, permitted to resign" in the middle of his 1/c year.

Edwin died in New York City on February 20, 1922, possibly by shooting himself. (An offline death listing located by historian Kathy Franz gives only "gas" as the cause of death.)

Edwin was a Presidential appointment to the Naval Academy. In October 1885, Edwin was one of five cadets implicated in the hazing of fourth-classmen. In June 1886, he stood #45 in the second class.
In August 1917, Edwin was a captain in the Army engineer corps, Supply Company 365th Infantry. He sailed to France on December 19, 1917, on the Saint Louis. His engagements in France were Lys, St. Mihiel, and Meuse-Argonne. He sailed back to the States on the Olympic on February 18, 1919.
Edwin's brother John was a graduate of the Naval Academy in 1878.
He is buried in New York.
