CHARLES F. MARRON

Deer Lodge, Montana

Second Company

Navy picked up Charlie after two years at Carroll in pre-med. He was known for his aggressive spirit and good sportsmanship. Though he spars with everyone verbally he's always in there with a sensible solution when problems arise. Charlie's love for sports caused him to do a lot of work in PRC [Public Relations Club]. Working with Brigade boxing, he picked up the nickname, "canvas-back." He was also very active in the Newman Club and the Judo Club. Charlie and the Naval Service will enjoy having him first at Pensacola and then in the air. If he can fly planes like he can throw comments, we have Navy's answer to Rickenbacker in our midst.

He was also a member of the Power Squadron.

Loss

From the August 1962 issue of Shipmate:

It is with deep regret that I inform the class of the death of Lt.(jg) CHARLES F. MARRON in an aircraft accident on 9 January 1962 while on duty in the Philippine Islands. He was piloting an AD-5Q aircraft from VAW-13 and had just taken off on a cross-country movement of the squadron to Japan. His three crew members were also lost. Charlie was a member of the 2nd Company. He is survived by his parents… and a sister.

In February 1954, Pfc. Charles was in training with the Helena National Guard unit, and was using his guard rights to attend Carroll College. In November, Rep. Lee Metcalf (D-Mont) nominated Charles for the first class at the U. S. Air Force Academy, Colorado Springs.

He was a smokejumper in Missoula prior to his appointment to the Naval Academy.

After graduating from the Naval Academy, he took additional training at Pensacola where he made his first solo flight in 1959. He had additional training in Corpus Christi.

Lt. John L. McGillis of Deer Lodge escorted Charles’ remains home. John and Charles played basketball and graduated together from Powell High School in 1953.

A requiem high mass was celebrated on January 20 at the Immaculate Conception Church. The Rosary was recited on Friday evening. Burial was in Hillcrest Cemetery where full military rites were accorded by the officers and members of the Butte Naval Reserve Center.

On January 25, 1962, at the meeting of the Helena council, Knights of Columbus, his uncle John gave the memorial speech about Charles.
