"Art" "A. D. J." "Don Arturo"
YES, Ladies, he has freckles, and you can just imagine what influence had to be used to persuade the photographer to take them off. Uh, huh, he's Irish, it sticks out all over him, and so do his ears. And he's from Crabtown, too. Can you feature that?
He's a snake, at least he thinks he is. He is always at the hops, but he hardly ever drags. He has an idea that he is some hot little dancer, but somebody once expressed the opinion that he is a "loose moment." Away from the Academy he is a sheik of the first magnitude (Mrs. Pointdexter's kind). He writes many letters, but many days are ruined, for him, when he does not receive a letter from the O. A. O. (whichever one has the watch that day). We hate to thus spill the beans on him, but duty is duty.
Never "savvy," and although rather "non-reg," he has had an uncanny way of staying off the bushes and the Morning Roll of Honor.
"Hey '[N——-] [Note: edited by VMH.] Boy!' What's the lesson? I've lost my lesson sheet."

Loss
From Find A Grave:
Santa Monica, Calif., April 24 – Two men from the naval air base at San Diego, were killed today in the crash of their plane against a boundary fence of the ranch estate of the late Will Rogers, actor-humorist.
The victims were Lieut. Arthur Donovan Joseph Ferrell, 32, the pilot, and William C. Kerr, aviation carpenter’s mate, first class, of San Diego.
Other Information
From researcher Kathy Franz:
Arthur graduated from Annapolis High School in 1921.
He was attending the Naval Academy concurrently with his brothers Joseph and Edwin making his father the first to have three sons at the academy at the same time. In 1920, Arthur’s brother Joseph received his appointment to the academy and graduated in 1924. Brother Edwin fell behind in his academy work due to sickness, and he did not graduate with the class of 1926.
Arthur married Polly Warner on May 10, 1927, at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York. He later married Mary Cathcart of Pensacola, divorced her, and then remarried her on March 3, 1933, in Rockville, Maryland.
Arthur’s mother and sister were both named Anna. In 1910, the family lived in Manhattan where his father Joseph was a proprietor of a café. Joseph was appointed to the naval school in 1904 but was forced to resign because of an injury before graduation in 1908. Arthur’s oldest brother William attended the academy but resigned after injurying his knee. Later, he was appointed to the teaching staff at the academy. He was a resident instructor in marine engineering in 1924 and assistant to the curator of the academy museum. Previously, he was a bookkeeper at Camp Meade. His mother was Joseph’s first wife.
Arthur earned his wings as naval aviator #3952 on November 15, 1932.
He is buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
The "Register of Commissioned and Warrant Officers of the United States Navy and Marine Corps" was published annually from 1815 through at least the 1970s; it provided rank, command or station, and occasionally billet until the beginning of World War II when command/station was no longer included. Scanned copies were reviewed and data entered from the mid-1840s through 1922, when more-frequent Navy Directories were available.
The Navy Directory was a publication that provided information on the command, billet, and rank of every active and retired naval officer. Single editions have been found online from January 1915 and March 1918, and then from three to six editions per year from 1923 through 1940; the final edition is from April 1941.
The entries in both series of documents are sometimes cryptic and confusing. They are often inconsistent, even within an edition, with the name of commands; this is especially true for aviation squadrons in the 1920s and early 1930s.
Alumni listed at the same command may or may not have had significant interactions; they could have shared a stateroom or workspace, stood many hours of watch together… or, especially at the larger commands, they might not have known each other at all. The information provides the opportunity to draw connections that are otherwise invisible, though, and gives a fuller view of the professional experiences of these alumni in Memorial Hall.
